1.  How do I apply to the Accelerated BSN program? 
Only one application is required and needs to be submitted directly through NursingCAS.   

2.  When does the program start? 
The ABSN program has two start dates each year: Spring (January) or Summer (May).  

3.  What is the deadline to apply for the Accelerated BSN program? 
Please refer to the program deadlines on our admissions page. 

4.  Do I need to fill out a specific application for the SONHS? 
Only one application is required. Make sure you select the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies Accelerated BSN program and the semester you plan to begin. 

5.  What are the GPA requirements for the Accelerated BSN Program? 

  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (All  completed course work, including prerequisite courses) 
  • A minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA 
  • A grade of C or better is required in all prerequisite courses 
  • A grade of C- or below is considered a failed prerequisite 
  • Only 1 failed prerequisite course may be repeated  
     

6.  What are the prerequisite course requirements for the Accelerated BSN program? Courses listed below are UM course codes. Please refer to our Admission Guide for more course equivalencies from local area schools.  

  • Chemistry w/ Lab (CHM 103/105) (Chemistry for premed or chemistry majors meets this requirement) 
  • Human Anatomy w/ Lab (HCS 212/213) 
  • Human Physiology (HCS 215) (Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II meet this requirement) 
  • Introduction to Microbiology (MIC 320) 
  • Introduction to Psychology (PSY 110) 
  • Introductory Statistics (NUR 202) (Must have a prerequisite of at least college algebra) 
  • Nutrition (NUR 306) (must cover the lifespan from birth to death) 
  • Human Growth and Development (NUR 317) (must cover the lifespan from birth to death) 
     

7.  How do I know if the prerequisite courses I have taken or plan to take meet the SONHS requirement? 
We encourage you to compare them to the prerequisite course descriptions in the UM’s Academic Bulletin or our Admission Guide 

8.  Can my transcripts be evaluated before I apply? 
Transcript evaluations are completed once an application has been submitted along with all official transcripts. In the meantime, we encourage you to review our Admission Guide 

9.  Can I take the required prerequisites at UM? 
You may be able to take courses as a non-degree seeking student by contacting the Division of Continuing & international Education at 305-284-4000 or by filling out their ‘contact us’ form 

10. Do any of the prerequisite courses need to be within a certain timeframe??
Any science prerequisite course must be within the last ten years from when the program starts. 

11. What is the pass rate for the NCLEX?
Our most recent first-time passing rate is 94.95%, #1 in South Florida. Rates are reported on a quarterly basis. Please visit https://www.ncsbn.org/nclex.htm for the most recent passing rates.

12.How many Accelerated BSN students are in a cohort?
Approximately 90 students are admitted each summer and spring.

13. Is there housing for Accelerated BSN students?
While we do not have on-campus housing for ABSN students, you can work with the Department of Housing and Residential Life for off-campus housing information and options. They can be reached at 305-284-4505.

14. Are any of the nursing courses taught online?
The Accelerated BSN program is fully in person.  Classes are taught at the Coral Gables campus.

15. How many clinical hours does an Accelerated BSN student complete within a semester?
Students complete anywhere between 140 to 336 hours per semester.

16. Are scholarships available for Accelerated BSN students?
